Our story
Founded by physicians, for physicians.
MVPA was founded in 1996 as managed care reshaped how independent physicians and community hospitals worked together. Rather than navigate that landscape one office at a time, the physicians of the Mid Valley and Knapp Medical Center built a non-profit organization to negotiate collectively, share administrative work, and stay independent.
Three decades later, MVPA still represents 66+ community physicians across the Mid Rio Grande Valley — partnering with commercial, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid managed-care, and workers’ compensation plans so doctors can stay focused on patient care.
Mission & structure
Collective leverage. Individual autonomy.
MVPA exists to keep managed-care contracting in physician hands. We pool the administrative work so member practices get the benefits of a hospital-anchored network without giving up independent decision-making.
Non-profit Physician-Hospital Organization
MVPA brings Knapp Medical Center and independent community physicians together under a single contracting organization — owned and governed by physicians, with the hospital as its anchor partner.
Messenger model
Under the messenger model, MVPA negotiates with payors on behalf of the network while each member physician retains full authority over their own contract decisions. The network creates leverage; the physician keeps autonomy.
Physician-led board
A five-seat board representing physician members and Knapp Medical Center sets MVPA's contracting and operational priorities. Day-to-day administration is handled by MVPA staff so member practices stay focused on patients.
Hospital partnership
Anchored by Knapp Medical Center.
Knapp Medical Center has anchored the MVPA network since day one — providing the institutional scale that makes managed-care contracting practical for independent community practices in Weslaco, Mercedes, and the surrounding Mid Valley.
Together, the network and the hospital represent a full spectrum of primary care and specialty services for patients across the region.
